All dogs deserve love and care, regardless of their appearance or physical challenges. Unfortunately, some shelter dogs miss out on finding a home because people judge them based not on their character, but on their looks or conditions.
One such dog is Darby, a small pup from California weighing only five pounds. Despite his friendly nature, Darby was overlooked at many adoption events, and the reason is disheartening.
Helga Weiss, president of Paw Squad 559 in California, couldn’t ignore the little dog’s plight. When she heard about Darby being constantly overlooked at a busy shelter, she took him in as a foster, determined to give him the chance he deserved.

However, she was puzzled as to why no one had chosen Darby yet.
It soon became clear: people passed on Darby because of his fused kneecaps, a condition that made his walk a bit awkward.
Even though he could still run and play like any other pet, potential adopters dismissed him as “broken,” focusing solely on his unique gait.
Helga witnessed how other dogs attracted attention, while Darby remained unnoticed in his kennel at various adoption events. Determined to find him a home, she decided to try a new approach.

Helga, sharing her thoughts on social media, proclaimed, “My precious Darby. I’d choose you over and over again.”
Noting his remarkable qualities as the ideal lap dog, she expressed hope that one day someone would recognize Darby’s worth despite his distinctive walk.
To help Darby a little more, she also provided details on how others could support him through Paw Squad 559.
Deeply affected by Darby’s situation, Helga created a TikTok video showcasing Darby nestled in his kennel, looking forlorn and alone. The video aimed to show people the loving dog she saw beyond the condition he was born with.

The video went viral, capturing the hearts of viewers everywhere and changing Darby’s story. According to a Facebook update from the California rescue group, “After his sad video of giving up at events went viral, Darby is now a hit!
We are not kidding when we say our phones, & emails, are blowing up! Darby can’t believe how many people love him.”
Darby does not need extensive medical attention—just a home without stairs or a pool. He thrives around children, enjoys his toys, and loves being held, proving himself to be a delightful little companion.

Whether adventuring or cuddling, Darby exudes affection.
After enduring longer than he should have, Darby’s rescuers remain hopeful that his new family is just around the corner, ready to offer him the love he has always deserved.
