An Asian elephant named Viola briefly escaped onto a busy street in Butte, Montana, after being startled by the sound of a vehicle backfiring during her pre-show bath on Tuesday. The unexpected walk caused a temporary traffic halt before Viola was safely returned to her trailer.
The incident unfolded when Viola, part of the Jordan World Circus, broke through a flimsy fence behind the Butte Civic Center, where she was being bathed.

She wandered onto Harrison Avenue, one of the city’s main roads, causing drivers to pause and record the unusual sight.
“I had to do a double take,” said Olivia LaBeau, a resident. “It was such an unexpected thing to see in Montana.”

Viola strolled for about half a block before heading into a parking lot, eventually settling on a nearby lawn to graze.
Circus staff quickly brought a trailer with another elephant to coax her back. Without hesitation, Viola walked up the ramp and rejoined her fellow elephant.
The entire episode lasted about 10 minutes, and Viola showed no signs of distress as she performed in two circus shows later that day.

Bill Melvin, the Civic Center manager, explained, “The other elephant was happy to see her, and the show went on without a hitch.”
However, animal rights groups, including PETA and Compassion Works International, voiced concerns over the incident.
They criticized the use of animals in circuses, highlighting the potential danger to both the public and the animals involved.

Viola is scheduled to perform next in Helena, the state capital, as part of the Jordan World Circus tour.
