Its chin, throat, neck, sides, and breasts are deep black, while the rest of its underparts range from creamy white to pale yellow, creating a visually stunning look. This bird’s facial markings make it unique and resemble a neatly trimmed goatee.

One of the most remarkable features of the plush-crested jay is the bright blue line that outlines its yellow eyes, giving it a distinctive, almost regal appearance. Its head is capped with deep black feathers, and just above its eyes, a crescent of ultramarine blue adds a touch of brilliance.
Below the eye, a similar blue mark merges into a cyan stripe, forming a V-shape across the birdโs face. The bird’s nape starts pale but shifts into a rich ultramarine blue, completing its bold look.

Its black bill, striking yellow eyes, and dark legs and feet give the bird an air of confidence. This vibrant bird thrives in various forest habitats, ranging from lowland evergreen and tropical deciduous forests to temperate rainforests.
Found at elevations up to 1500 meters, and sometimes even higher in Bolivia, the plush-crested jay is a familiar sight across forested landscapes.
Its diet consists mainly of insects and other small invertebrates, though it also enjoys fruit from several plant species, including figs, philodendrons, and guava. Opportunistically, these birds may feed on nestlings, eggs, frogs, seeds, and even maize.

Plush-crested jays are known for their cooperative family structures. During the breeding season, the young from previous years help with nest-building and defending their territory.
Their nests, carefully constructed from twigs and plant fibers, are hidden within thick foliage, 4 to 7 meters above ground.
Inside, the female lays 2 to 4 speckled eggs, which are incubated for 18 to 20 days. The male supports her by providing food, ensuring the well-being of their offspring.

Once hatched, the chicks take about 22 to 24 days to fledge and begin their journey into adulthood.
Though the plush-crested jay faces habitat loss due to deforestation, it has shown resilience by adapting to smaller forest patches, particularly those near larger forests. This adaptability offers hope for its continued survival.
With its striking appearance and strong family bonds, the plush-crested jay is a remarkable species that leaves a lasting impression on those lucky to encounter it. Protecting its habitat is essential for preserving this captivating bird for generations.
