The Malabar Trogon, sometimes called the Indian Trogon, is a medium-sized bird from the Trogonidae family. Its vivid plumage combines deep crimson and shimmering indigo, giving it an almost regal appearance.
The male’s bright red breast and belly contrasted by green and blue on its back and wings is particularly eye-catching, making it a favorite among ornithologists and photographers.
A key feature of the Malabar Trogon is its slightly hooked bill, perfectly adapted to its diet. These birds primarily consume fruits like figs and berries, which they skillfully pick from branches using their specialized beaks.
Despite their striking colors, Malabar Trogons are hard to spot. They prefer the dense cover of evergreen forests, creeping through the trees and often going unnoticed. Patience is needed to find them; their soft calls and whistles are usually the first sign of their presence.
