During a routine patrol in Washington State, a deputy from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department stumbled upon a distressing situation. A stray, white dog attempting to cross the street was hit by a vehicle, leaving her frightened and hurt. The dog used her remaining energy to flee and find shelter in a nearby concrete structure.
Concerned for the dog’s wellbeing, the officer pursued her, hoping to offer assistance. When he located her hiding place, he spoke gently in an attempt to coax her out. Responding to the officer’s soothing voice, the injured dog eventually emerged, allowing him to take her into his care and transport her to a veterinary clinic.

Upon arrival at the vet, a scan revealed the dog was without a microchip and owner, putting her at risk of euthanasia. Determined to give her a chance at life, People for Animal Care & Kindness in Gig Harbor stepped in, generously covering the costs of her emergency surgery.
Transferred to Sumner Veterinary Hospital, the dog, now named Piper, began her healing process. Nichol Phillips, the hospital’s marketing manager, expressed empathy for Piper’s journey, noting, “It truly breaks my heart that she found safety in an underground culvert. We are so grateful to the PCSD deputy who shed his gear and crawled into the pipe to get her.”

Following a successful surgery, Piper moved into a foster home where she could recuperate fully. In this nurturing environment, she regained her strength and confidence, even enjoying car rides and playing with other dogs. Her caregivers are optimistic that Piper will eventually find a permanent, loving home where she can leave her difficult past behind and enjoy a joyful future.
Unfortunately, Piper’s story is not unique. As reported by Pet Playgrounds, approximately 1.2 million dogs die annually in car-related accidents. This statistic includes pets that are inadequately restrained near roads or in vehicles. To ensure the safety of your furry companions, it is essential to secure them properly, whether in the car or in a yard by a busy street. Keeping both pets and drivers safe requires attentiveness from all road users. Always keep an eye out for animals, curbing potential hazards before they arise.
