After encountering Skipper, you might find yourself saying, “I’ve seen it all now.”
I’ve come across many unique dogs in my time—those with extra ears or even tails where you wouldn’t expect them. However, discovering a dog with six legs was truly a surprise.

Skipper, an Aussie-Border Collie mix, was born with some unusual physical traits that initially led experts to anticipate numerous health challenges for her. Surprisingly, Skipper defied all expectations and was perfectly fine, albeit lacking a loving human companion.
Born at the Neel Veterinary Hospital in Oklahoma City, Skipper was markedly different from her eight siblings. Her uniqueness captured the attention of everyone present at her birth. Sadly, her mother rejected her, as animals often do when a pup is different.
Defying the odds, and earning the nickname “Miracle,” Skipper showed everyone that she was thriving despite being just a few days old. According to a statement released by the Neel Veterinary staff on social media, Skipper was the first living puppy diagnosed with a combination of rare congenital conditions including monocephalus dipygus and monocephalus rachipagus dibrachius tetrapus.

This meant she had a single head and chest cavity but two pelvic regions, two lower urinary tracts, two reproductive systems, two tails, and six legs. It is believed she was meant to have a twin but the embryos did not fully separate. Skipper also showed signs of spina bifida.
Further medical evaluations revealed that despite her unusual conditions, Skipper was healthy and in no pain. “She acts like a strong healthy puppy so we want to give her the chance,” Dr. Neel said, expressing joy in Skipper’s vitality and endearing nature. Skipper was a testament to resilience, even though her condition suggested she was a result of two embryos that did not properly separate in the womb. Despite her quirks, all six of her legs were functional.
News of Skipper’s birth sparked varying reactions on social media; some argued she should not have survived. However, one compassionate individual welcomed Skipper into their home, despite her complex health issues.

Reaching Oklahoma City, Skipper eventually found a loving family with two experienced “hooman” parents, well-versed in caring for pets with special needs. Skipper’s journey was shared online, capturing the hearts of many.
Unfortunately, as weeks passed, it became clear Skipper’s condition was more severe than initially believed. One month in, she was diagnosed with hydrocephalus on top of her existing health issues. This led to further medical interventions including regular check-ups and CT scans. Skipper also faced challenges in drinking formula as some of it often went into her lungs.
Skipper spent considerable time at Neel Animal Hospital receiving treatment for her various ailments. Despite hopes for her full recovery, her health conditions proved too complex and severe.

Her devoted caregivers worked tirelessly to afford her treatments and create a loving home environment. However, nearly eight months after her birth, Skipper passed away due to the combined effects of her medical conditions.
Skipper’s owners expressed gratitude to all who supported her journey: “We are so grateful for all of you who have supported us through this and helped us to give her the best life! She will forever be in our hearts.” Skipper challenged doubts and showed strength despite her short life.
Rest in peace, sweet Skipper. You’re now running free, embraced by those who understand the strength you displayed all along.
