As she went about her daily routine, Sabrina Garcia, a passionate animal enthusiast, stumbled upon an unexpected visitor—a tiny mouse that had made itself comfortable in her home. Although she wasn’t planning on getting a new pet, Garcia caught the mouse and headed outdoors to safely release it. While searching for the perfect spot, she noticed a sewer drain that seemed like an ideal hideout.
Approaching the drain, Garcia was startled to find a pair of anxious eyes staring back at her. The eyes belonged to a puppy that had mysteriously ended up in the sewer, hidden away from sight.
Without delay, Garcia reached out to Suzette Hall, the founder of an animal rescue organization in Irvine, California, for help. Hall later shared on Facebook the surprise and concern they felt upon discovering the pup. “They couldn’t believe their eyes when they looked down and saw him. He couldn’t even cry for help,” she wrote.
The team decided to name the puppy Donatello. They quickly set to uncover how he had ended up in such a predicament. Their investigation revealed only a small opening into the sewer, too tiny for Donatello to have entered on his own. This led to the unsettling conclusion that someone must have placed him there deliberately.
Motivated by this discovery, the rescuers located a manhole cover that concealed a ladder—perfect for reaching Donatello. Two rescuers descended into the sewer while Hall and the others anxiously waited above.
After a tense wait, the team emerged, holding Donatello safely in their embrace. “We did it! He was and is nothing short of a miracle,” Hall proudly wrote.
Once freed, the team swiftly transported Donatello to the Camino Pet Hospital. Exhausted from his ordeal, he fell asleep in their arms, finally feeling secure. At the hospital, a thorough examination uncovered that he had resorted to eating trash—and even a small towel—to survive.
Hall explained on Facebook, “He was so hungry, he ate whatever he could. He would have died down [there].” Despite his poor state, the dedicated efforts of rescuers and veterinarians ensured Donatello received the urgent care he needed, including an emergency surgery, which led to his remarkable recovery.
As Donatello continues to heal, he starts to shed his fears with the help of love, patience, and warm cuddles from those around him. Although he requires one more surgery, he is on his way to a happier life in a forever home. Meanwhile, his temporary family is diligently working to make sure he regains his confidence and finds joy again.
“He’s worth it. It’s time he learns what love is,” Hall shared on Facebook, expressing optimism for Donatello’s bright future.
