A tiny dog bravely navigated a bustling street in California, limping painfully as she attempted to dodge the passing cars. Though clearly scared and hurt, she seemed to cling to a glimmer of hope that someone would notice her plight and stop to help.
That hope turned into reality when Ivy and Jaina Spagis, the founders of the local animal rescue group Cats of San Bernardino, caught sight of her from their car. Without a second thought, they pulled over and rushed to her aid.
It was evident that the pup, later named Reina, had sustained injuries, likely from being hit by a car, and needed immediate medical attention to survive. Ivy approached her cautiously, making sure not to add to her fear.

Reina seemed to sense the good intentions of her rescuers. She inched toward them, her tail tucked but her eyes full of trust.
Once Ivy managed to gather her into her arms, Reina appeared to relax completely, feeling safe at last. “As soon as I got her in my arms, she kind of just melted into me,” Ivy shared with The Dodo.
During the short trip to the veterinarian, Reina remained close to Ivy’s chest, not wanting to move. Ivy comforted her with gentle strokes and soothing words, promising her that she was no longer alone.
At the veterinary clinic, Reina received immediate attention and was kept overnight for monitoring. X-rays revealed a fracture in her front leg.

The vet administered pain relief and applied a cast to her leg, which would need to remain in place for roughly three weeks.
The following day, when Ivy and Jaina returned, Reina couldn’t contain her excitement, greeting them with a wagging tail and a beaming smile.
Her rescuers were relieved to hear that her leg injury was her only significant harm and that she was on the road to making a full recovery.
Back at Ivy and Jaina’s home, they prepared a snug resting place for Reina. She settled in immediately, seeming to understand she was finally in a safe haven.

In the ensuing days, Reina basked in the love and care from her rescuers, her tail constantly wagging. Her cheerful demeanor and gratitude were inspiring, showcasing her resilience despite her past ordeals.
Soon, Meghan, a volunteer with Cats of San Bernardino, visited and instantly formed a bond with Reina. She was certain she wanted to offer Reina a permanent home.
Once the cast was removed, Reina moved in with Meghan, starting a thrilling new chapter in her life. She quickly connected with her new dog companions, enjoyed playing in the yard, and absorbed all the affection her new family offered.

Today, Reina thrives in her California home, surrounded by love and attention. Her journey from a frightened, injured stray to a joyful and confident pet illustrates the transformative power of kindness and compassion.
Reina’s contentment is evident in her smile. Indeed, she has found a place she can truly call home.
