There are some animal cruelty stories that are hard to fathom, yet they happen. The tale of Lloyd, an adult dog, is one such story.

At ten years old, Lloyd found himself caught in the turmoil of his owners’ divorce. This unfortunate situation led to severe neglect, leaving him weighing just 75 pounds, significantly below the healthy weight for a dog his size.

When Lloyd was rescued, the staff at a Florida animal control facility were shocked by his emaciated condition. Although he was transferred following grave neglect and starvation, things started looking up for him eventually.

Chandra Honican, who runs an equine sanctuary in Kentucky, was deeply touched by Lloyd’s situation and took immediate steps to help him. With the support of her friends, she managed to adopt Lloyd from the Florida shelter and brought him to her home in Kentucky, where he started a new chapter.

“Lloyd is officially now a Kentucky dog! We all made it back home safely. He is doing so well, his spirit remains so amazing to watch,” Chandra shared in a heartfelt Facebook post.

After weeks of veterinary care and surge...

Despite finding a loving home, Lloyd faced numerous challenges. His weakened stomach required a special diet, as regular adult dog food was too harsh for him. Chandra expressed, “It’s hard to even put into words what this dog has been through. It’s even harder to understand how unbelievably skinny he is, pictures just don’t get the point across.”

To start with, Lloyd needed to eat only wet food and also dealt with a medical condition known as bloat, which required surgery. Nonetheless, Chandra and her family were committed to his recovery.

After weeks of veterinary care and surgery for his bloat, Lloyd began to experience the comfort of his new home. He soon showed his affectionate nature and revealed himself to be quite the cuddle bug. “He really is such a joy to be around. He absolutely loves affection. If we could all sit with him for hours and just rub on him, that’s what he would prefer,” Chandra mentioned.

What’s most important now is that Lloyd ...

Due to his condition, Lloyd was fed five small meals daily, which allowed him to gradually gain weight. Although his recovery will take time, his spirit remains undampened.

Lloyd feels secure in what he understands to be his forever home and has formed a close bond with Chandra’s fiancé, whom he follows around affectionately. “My fiancé is hands-down Lloyd‘s favorite person in the world. He wants to go wherever he goes! I’m pretty sure he wishes that his humans didn’t have to work,” Chandra concluded on Facebook.

As Lloyd works towards full recovery, he’ll enjoy the company of other animals on the farm and continue making new friends. So far, he’s been thriving, much to the delight of his new family.

What’s most important now is that Lloyd never has to worry about neglect again. Surrounded by a loving family and new friends, Lloyd is exactly where he belongs—safe and cherished in his new home. Here’s to many joyful years ahead for Lloyd!
