In a heartwarming tale of courage and loyalty, a dog named Kuno has captured the admiration of many for his heroic actions during a military mission. This four-legged hero showed an extraordinary level of bravery when he put his life on the line to save British soldiers under siege. For these acts of valor that went far beyond what was expected, Kuno was awarded the prestigious Dickin Medal by the British military, an honor that is well-deserved.
Kuno’s brave deeds unfolded during an intense encounter with al-Qaeda militants. Amidst a chaotic scene of flying grenades and the din of machine guns, Kuno saw that his human companions were in grave danger. Without hesitation, he sprinted through a storm of gunfire to thwart the attackers’ plans, a daring move that ultimately safeguarded the soldiers. Tragically, Kuno sustained serious injuries while performing his duty, with multiple gunshots wounding his back legs. He was quickly taken to the US Army Veterinary Treatment Facility for necessary care.
The severity of his injuries led to the amputation of one of Kuno’s paws, requiring him to rely on a brace for one side and a prosthetic limb on the other. Notably, in 2016, he became the first Military Working Dog in the UK to receive such a prosthetic. With his service now complete, Kuno is enjoying a well-earned retirement with a caring family, living the relaxed and joyful life every dog deserves.
The Dickin Medal, presented by the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA), recognizes animals that have displayed exceptional bravery. Kuno joins an illustrious group, becoming the 72nd recipient since the medal’s inception. This distinguished group includes 35 dogs, 32 messenger pigeons from World War II, four horses, and even a cat.
British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace commended Kuno, stating that his actions merited this significant honor. She emphasized that the award highlights the remarkable accomplishments of military dogs both locally and globally.
