In a heartwarming series of events in Orange, California, a neglected dog found his way into the hearts of many, starting with Rena Perkens Schlueter, who discovered him right outside her home. Initially, Rena was puzzled by the strange creature she saw on her doorstep, unclear if it was even a dog due to its severely matted and dirty fur.
Once Rena realized the scruffy creature was indeed a desperate dog in need of help, she was overcome with compassion and tried to assist him. However, the frightened dog bolted away before she could get close. Despite losing sight of him, Rena hoped for another chance to help him.
Her opportunity came when, to her surprise, the dog reappeared in front of her house. This time, though still wary, the dog showed a glimmer of hope for rescue. Although he barked nervously if she got too near, Rena sensed it was time to involve the experts. “I tried to approach him, but I know he was very scared and probably in pain,” Rena recalled in an interview with Rocky Kanaka. She then did what she thought best: contacted Animal Control, who responded swiftly, arriving within 20 minutes after seeing the situation as an emergency.
Recognizing the need for professional support, Rena also raised awareness about the stray dog by posting his picture in a local Facebook group. Her post quickly grabbed the community’s attention and spread the dog’s story far and wide.
Meanwhile, the dog was taken to OC Animal Care, where, to ease his distress, staff decided to sedate him during grooming and medical evaluations. Against the odds, the results were remarkable. The once-matted dog transformed into a radiant, healthy-looking canine, much to Rena’s joy and the relief of all involved.
The shelter staff discovered that this resilient pup was about 10 years old, 12 pounds, and impressively healthy for his age. They anticipated that due to his background, it might take some time for him to find a new home.
Contrary to these expectations, the dog found his forever family in no time. Inspired by Rena’s social media post, Deanna Briggs, a member of the Facebook group, decided to adopt him the very next day, moved by his story and newfound charm.
This once-neglected dog, now thriving in a loving home, owes his happy ending to the caring individuals who acted decisively to alter his fate. Thanks to their dedication, he transformed from a forlorn stray into a content and adored pet.
