Visiting a dog shelter can be an emotional experience, with so many eager dogs hoping for a bit of affection and attention. These dogs often spend long stretches of time waiting for someone to notice them and show them a little kindness.
At the Brooklyn Animal Care Center (ACC), one young dog named Barbie devised a unique strategy to ensure she stood out from the crowd.
This six-month-old pup ended up at the shelter after her previous owners surrendered her due to landlord issues and the challenge of managing two puppies simultaneously.
Barbie is described in shelter records as exceptionally friendly and affectionate, with a playful energy that can sometimes be tinged with fear.
Despite her circumstances, she figured out an endearing way to capture the attention of passersby: Barbie would reach her little paws through her kennel bars, inviting interactions with her gentle game of pattycake.
This clever move quickly became Barbie’s trademark. According to a group called Boroughbred in Brooklyn, “Barbie greets me in her kennel with her butt in the air, tippy tapping, and hoping it’s her turn to get a break from her kennel.”
Her playful and engaging personality endeared her to everyone at the shelter.
Manisha Shah, a volunteer at the ACC, shared with The Dodo that Barbie loved playing in the yard, jumping on balls and cuddling with volunteers. Her curious nature won everyone’s hearts, suggesting that she wouldn’t be waiting long for a new home.
The rescue group Boroughbred in Brooklyn posted a video on Instagram showcasing Barbie’s charming habit, which quickly went viral and attracted potential adopters.
Shah noted, “She was adopted fast! One of our followers saw our post, went to the shelter, and adopted her quickly!”
Barbie soon left the shelter to start a new chapter with her loving family in New York City. She now enjoys a life filled with the affection and attention she has always deserved.
Her new owners even started an Instagram account, @barbie_berry_cute, to share updates on her escapades. They kept her name as Barbie, finding it suited her too well to change.
From celebrating her first birthday to enjoying daily adventures, Barbie’s life is happier than ever, and her followers can track her joyful journey online.
