Dog owners go to great lengths to keep their furry friends safe, but sometimes dogs can’t resist the urge to explore and end up in tricky situations. This happened to Rilee, a dog who embarked on an adventurous exploration of an old mine shaft on her family’s property in Placerville, California, and found herself in quite a predicament.
Rilee wandered into the shaft and unfortunately fell down a 60-foot vertical borehole. Her owner, Kimberlee Adams Norwood Mickelson, acted swiftly, despite her shock, and immediately called for help.

The El Dorado County Fire Protection District wasted no time responding to Mickelson’s call. Upon arriving at the scene, the firefighters learned of Rilee’s fall after she had ventured about 200 yards into the abandoned mine.
Captain Jacob Poganski described the situation to The Dodo, stating that they had handled dogs falling into shafts before, but this was especially serious. The firefighters quickly devised a rescue plan, knowing that the operation required precision and care.

According to a Facebook post detailing the rescue, they conducted a permit-required confined space entry and strategically lowered a rescuer into the borehole using ropes. As the rescuer got closer, Rilee was understandably anxious, but her attitude shifted when she realized she was about to be rescued.
Jacob Poganski noted, “The dog was very anxious at first, but became calm and friendly once she realized someone was there to help her.” Rilee remained calm as the rescuer secured a harness around her, which facilitated a smooth extrication.
The crew’s coordination and Rilee’s trust paid off, with the successful completion of the rescue mission. The El Dorado County Fire Protection District proudly announced that Rilee was safely brought to the surface without any complications.

Once she was back on solid ground, Rilee expressed her gratitude by excitedly greeting each of her rescuers, as if to say “thank you.” Despite the ordeal, Rilee sustained only minor injuries, much to the relief of her owner, who could not express enough gratitude for the firefighters’ efforts.
Kimberlee shared her relief and appreciation on Facebook, writing, “I’m forever grateful for their effort, care, and willingness to risk their own lives to save my Rilee! Miracles do happen! She’s ALIVE!!!”
The rescue served as a heartfelt reminder for the firefighters of the profound impact of their work. Despite the challenges and risks involved, saving lives is deeply rewarding, and Rilee’s rescue was a testament to this noble mission.
