In the early hours of the night, a troubling report emerged about a female elephant who had been shot, leaving her with severe injuries and two young calves in desperate need of rescue.
Rescuing elephants involves carefully verifying their orphan status to ensure they are not just temporarily separated from their herd.
Tragically, the severity of the mother’s injuries led to the difficult decision to euthanize her. A dedicated team promptly located the injured elephant and her calves.
The mother’s severe shoulder wounds had rendered her unable to stand, which led the team to tranquilize both her and the baby elephant.
Tranquilizing an elephant is a complex procedure. The veterinarian calculated the elephant’s weight, determined the dosage, and administered the tranquilizer.
The goal was to induce unconsciousness safely to facilitate the transportation of the elephant by airplane.
With the elephant safely en route to the sanctuary, a vigilant team ensured that the airstrip was clear of obstacles.
Upon arrival, the elephant was gently unloaded, and water was poured over her to keep her cool while she remained sedated.
Once at the sanctuary, the baby elephant was placed in a stall, where veterinarians conducted a thorough examination.
They assessed the calf for injuries and illnesses and gained insights into its recent experiences with the herd.
The veterinarians discovered dried blood on the calf, which they traced back to the gunshot wound on its mother.
The calf had stayed close to its injured mother, demonstrating remarkable loyalty and compassion.
The next step was to wake the elephant from sedation. A carefully administered injection revived the calf, although the process took slightly longer than anticipated.
Eventually, the baby elephant regained consciousness but showed signs of agitation and disorientation.
To facilitate the calf’s reintegration into the wild, keepers minimized human interaction. One keeper, however, approached the calf gently, using soft words and proximity to establish a bond.
When other elephants were introduced, the matriarch, Shaba, quickly took notice of the newcomer. Elephants, known for their acute sense of smell, use their trunks to form connections.
In a touching gesture, Shaba welcomed the baby elephant into the herd by entwining her trunk around the young one.
Thanks to the efforts of the rescue team and the sanctuary’s staff, this resilient young elephant now has a new chance at life, surrounded by a supportive family and the warmth of a caring herd.
