In some of the saddest tales of abandonment, there can be unexpected moments of joy, as demonstrated by a Bulldog named Rome.
This endearing canine was found tied to the gate of a Texas animal shelter, accompanied by a small Chihuahua. Alongside them lay only a coat, a blanket, and a few toys—a distressing scene common in Austin, Texas.
Austin Pets Alive!, a local rescue group, quickly took in both dogs. Initially, Rome’s story seemed like another unfortunate case of neglect. But as the shelter team soon learned, his saga was far from typical.

Rome’s gentle and affectionate nature was apparent from the start. However, the reason behind his abandonment remained unclear. The shelter team did not hesitate to proceed with standard procedures, including scanning Rome for a microchip. What they discovered took everyone by surprise.
Rome hadn’t actually been abandoned by his original family. In fact, he had been missing since 2021 after disappearing from his yard in Perris, California. His unexpected appearance over 1,000 miles away in Texas remained a puzzle.
Austin Pets Alive! shared this astonishing story on Instagram, revealing that Rome was discovered with no identification. His microchip led rescuers back to his original family, who were stunned by the news. They had tirelessly searched for him, posting flyers, knocking on doors, checking shelters, and using social media—until hope faded with time.

This remarkable phone call, however, changed everything. Rome’s family eagerly set out on a road trip from California to Texas, determined to reclaim their beloved dog.
Upon arriving at the shelter, a mix of excitement and nerves filled the air. Would Rome remember his family after so long? When Rome saw them, there was no doubt. He sped towards them and fell into their arms, overwhelmed with affection and happiness.
It was as though time had not passed for Rome. He climbed onto his dad’s lap, showering him with kisses and wagging his tail vigorously, seemingly compensating for their long separation.
While the details of how Rome traveled so far from home remain uncertain, one fact is unquestionable: seeing his family erased any fear and confusion he might have felt.

“Rome is finally back with the family that never stopped loving him, and he’s on his way back to California to start the next chapter of his life—right where he belongs,” the rescue organization concluded.
Rome’s heartwarming reunion underscores the importance of pet microchips, a fact Austin Pets Alive! emphasized. “Microchips reunite families. Make sure your pet’s information is current,” they reminded pet owners.
