While on a drive through St. Louis, Missouri, a truck driver noticed a small dog trembling in a roadside ditch, clearly in need of rescue.
Although he couldn’t stop immediately, the driver wasted no time in reaching out to Stray Rescue of St. Louis to alert them about the dog’s dire situation.
The animal rescue team sprang into action, arriving promptly at the location to help the frightened brown and white puppy. They decided to name her Odella, as a tribute to Odell, the truck driver who had informed them about her.
As Donna Lochmann, the Chief Life Saving Officer, approached, she noticed that despite Odella’s fear and hunger, the little pup wagged her tail. However, Odella’s condition was more serious than it appeared. It was discovered that she had been hit by a car, resulting in serious injuries.
“X-rays indicate a dislocated hip and broken foot,” explained the rescue team in a blog post.
Stray Rescue of St. Louis expressed immense gratitude for Odell’s immediate response, stating, “To picture her quivering in that ditch all by herself and hurting breaks our heart. Her healing journey begins today.”
Veterinarians were determined to save Odella’s leg, managing to re-position her dislocated hip and applying splints to support her healing.
Odella’s recovery was challenging, slowed by an additional fracture in her femur, but with several months of care, she eventually healed and was able to joyfully run again.
As she recuperated, Odella was cared for by her foster mom, Donna Lochmann, who had previously taken in several rescue dogs. Odella’s lovable nature quickly captivated Donna.

“She just never left. She came in, unpacked her bags, and that was pretty much it,” Donna wrote on Facebook.
Now, Odella is thriving in her new permanent home with Donna and her furry companions. Her days are joyful, filled with playtime, frolicking with other dogs, and relishing her toys and peanut butter-stuffed kongs.
Donna cherishes Odella’s cheerful demeanor, which exemplifies her remarkable resilience.
“She has the happiest personality and bounces from one dog to another to find one that will keep playing! She loves her toys and peanut butter kongs,” Donna shared.
It was the truck driver’s keen sight and caring nature that transformed Odella’s fate from a ditch of loneliness to a household filled with affection and happiness.
