In a tale of courage and loyalty, a dog named Kuno became a hero by risking his life to protect soldiers during a dangerous mission. His extraordinary actions earned him the prestigious Dickin Medal, the highest honor for animals displaying remarkable bravery, awarded by the British military.
Kuno’s story began with numerous successful missions supporting British soldiers. However, his most critical mission occurred during an al-Qaeda attack. The soldiers faced a dire situation, surrounded by heavily armed attackers wielding machine guns. Seeing his comrades in such peril, Kuno sprang into action to aid them.
Under intense enemy fire that included grenades and machine guns, soldier Sherrain Reber found himself trapped and unable to move. Recognizing the urgency, Kuno bravely charged through the crossfire, thwarting the attackers’ plans and successfully assisting in the mission’s completion. Sadly, during this heroic act, Kuno sustained severe injuries from gunshot wounds in his back legs, leading to his urgent transfer to the US Army Veterinary Treatment Facility for care.
Due to the severity of his injuries, one of Kuno’s paws had to be amputated, requiring him to use a brace on one side and a prosthetic limb on the other. In 2016, he made history as the first Military Working Dog in the United Kingdom to receive a prosthetic limb. After his retirement, Kuno was welcomed into a loving family, allowing him to enjoy a peaceful and fulfilling life.
Kuno joins a distinguished group of 71 other animal heroes who have received the Dickin Medal since its introduction by the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA). Among the previous recipients are 35 dogs, 32 World War II messenger pigeons, four horses, and one cat.
Acknowledging Kuno’s heroism, British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace emphasized that the Dickin Medal honors Kuno’s bravery, highlighting the significant role of military dogs both at home and abroad. This story serves as a powerful reminder of the vital protection provided by these loyal animals.
Now, Kuno relishes his well-earned retirement with his adoptive family, a fitting reward for a life of dedication, sacrifice, and unmatched courage. His story of bravery will forever inspire and be remembered.
