As teacher Yolanda approached San Marcos High School in Texas one morning, she was greeted by an unexpected surprise just outside the school doors. A group of five timid puppies, clearly in need of help, dashed toward her, capturing her attention with their imploring eyes.
Alarmed by their condition, Yolanda rushed into the school to seek help from her colleague, Belinda Peña, a senior assistant. Together, they returned to assess the situation. Nearby, they found an empty cardboard box, from which the puppies had apparently escaped. The presence of the box confirmed their suspicion that the puppies had been left behind intentionally.
Inside the box was a note left by whoever had abandoned the puppies. It expressed regret and explained that a dog shelter had turned them away, the previous owner intended to dispose of them, and the writer hoped the school staff could help them.
Moved by their plight, Yolanda, Belinda, and other staff members quickly took the puppies in. With temperatures rising, the first step was to offer the pups much-needed water and comfort.
The school staff, who were working shorter summer hours, were glad they were present to find the puppies just in time. “If not, who knows what would have happened?” Peña shared with The Dodo, reflecting on the timing.
While waiting for animal control to collect the dogs, the staff members took joy in playing with the exuberant pups. Each puppy, with ears too big for its little head, radiated pure joy.
One teacher decided to adopt one of the puppies on the spot, giving it a new home. Meanwhile, Kay Lynn Dodd, the school counselor, couldn’t bear the thought of parting with the remaining four. With the shelter possibly unavailable at the day’s end, she made the decision to foster them herself.
Dodd ensured that the puppies thrived in her care, showering them with love and attention at her home. She affectionately named them Rotund, Buttercup, Bandit, and Snickers. Each puppy thrived, soaking up the affection from their foster mom while they awaited permanent homes.
Though they bonded with Dodd, these playful pups eagerly anticipate meeting their future families, hopeful for a loving home. Everyone involved is optimistic that soon, the puppies will find families who will cherish them forever.
