In an inspiring tale of compassion, a group of dedicated hikers from Los Angeles, known as The 5 AM CREW, embarked on what would become an unforgettable trek. Led by their passion for early morning hikes, this group had tackled various mountain peaks in California. Yet, a particular journey on August 20, 2024, stood out as a testament to their remarkable kindness.
The group reached the top of Griffith Park’s trail, anticipating a well-deserved break. However, their relaxing plans took a turn when they spotted a German Shepherd lying still, without a leash or collar, accompanied only by a water bottle. Realizing the dog was in distress, the hikers felt compelled to act.

Omar, a key member of the crew, and his companions devised a plan to rescue the frightened dog, which they later named Hiker. Initial attempts using a fanny pack and a jump rope proved ineffective due to the dog’s size. With no other options left, Daniel Martinez, one of the hikers, offered a tarp he’d been using for exercises.
With care, they placed Hiker on the tarp and each took hold of an end, carefully carrying the dog down the trail. A journey that typically took 45 minutes stretched to over an hour. Despite the challenge, the hikers found joy in ensuring Hiker’s safety throughout the descent.
Omar later shared with Newsweek, “He looked like a sultan,” describing how content Hiker appeared by the journey’s end. This heartwarming rescue was even shared on Instagram via their handle @the.5amcrew, capturing their efforts for the world to see.

Once Hiker was nourished and reassured at the trail’s end, Daniel drove him to the vet for a thorough check-up. Although the German Shepherd was healthy, he had no microchip to trace an owner. Daniel, whose tarp facilitated Hiker’s rescue, offered him a home. While willing to return the dog if a rightful owner emerged, Daniel committed to a careful verification process first.
Days passed without anyone claiming Hiker, but he quickly adapted to his new life. According to Omar, Hiker became an integral part of their hiking group, even joining them on an excursion. The bond between Hiker and Daniel surpassed expectations, leaving Omar with a happy observation: “It almost seems like they chose each other.”
