While driving through a neighborhood in West Virginia, animal rescue advocate Dareth stumbled upon a heartbreaking sight that she couldn’t ignore. There, tied outside a family home, was a sorrowful-looking dog who seemed to be silently pleading for help as he stood shivering in the snow with freezing paws.
The dog, later named Buddy, captured Dareth’s thoughts as she reached out to animal control, hoping they would intervene. Disappointingly, the officers explained that leaving a dog chained outside was legal in West Virginia, and therefore, they couldn’t assist.

Determined not to abandon Buddy, Dareth began speaking with neighbors to gather more information. She learned that Buddy had been part of a family for thirteen years but had always been kept chained outside. One sympathetic neighbor had cut a hole in his fence to pass food to the neglected dog. Buddy had managed to escape a few times, wandering the neighborhood only to return to his home where neglect awaited him.
Realizing the extent of Buddy’s plight, Dareth decided to confront his owners and persuade them to surrender the dog. She visited their home repeatedly over two days, but her attempts went unanswered. Feeling there were no other options, she took Buddy with her, comforting him as he melted into her arms, finally receiving the affection he longed for.

Dareth took Buddy to the vet, where he was diagnosed with Lyme disease and a urinary tract infection. Due to years of chewing on his metal chain, it was impossible to estimate Buddy’s age from his worn teeth. Dareth chose to share Buddy’s touching story on Facebook, which caught the attention of her friend’s parents, retirees who had been considering adopting a senior dog. Upon seeing Buddy, they felt compelled to offer him a loving home.
Delighted with this turn of events, Dareth knew the couple would provide Buddy with the care and warmth he deserved. Although adjusting to indoor life proved challenging for Buddy at first, particularly since he was reluctant to eat from a bowl, his new parents lovingly fed him by hand. Gradually, Buddy acclimatized to his new environment, understanding that he was surrounded by love and compassion.

Today, Buddy cherishes his family, always staying close to them. He relishes walks, car rides, and especially enjoys lounging on his cozy bed and playing with his collection of stuffed toys. Thanks to Dareth’s unwavering commitment, Buddy now experiences the happiness he was denied for so long, finding comfort in a family that truly cares for him.
