When Megan, a rescuer from Nashville Dog & Cat Rescue, was informed about a pregnant dog roaming a parking lot in Tennessee, she knew she had to help. The dog, found wandering in search of food, left Megan with a deep sense of empathy. Clearly wary of humans, the dog kept her distance, prompting Megan to devise a plan to ensure her safety.
Despite Megan’s initial attempts to approach the dog, she remained cautious and avoided contact. This behavior suggested the dog, possibly a victim of prior abuse, was trying to shield her unborn puppies from similar harm. With the dog near her delivery date, Megan realized the urgency of the situation. “If something were to happen to her, nobody would know where the puppies are,” Megan shared with The Dodo.

Megan’s first attempts involved leaving food to lure the dog closer, but she remained wary. Eventually, the dog gave birth, changing the rescue strategy entirely. The challenge now was to have the mother dog guide them to her puppies to ensure their survival. Megan knew that in the days following birth, the mother dog would seek food, providing an opportunity to intervene.
With careful planning, Megan laid out food and a humane trap in areas the dog frequented. Once captured, they planned to attach a tracking device to locate the puppies. Hungry, the mother dog eventually succumbed to the enticing food laid out by her rescuers.
Upon securing the dog in the humane trap, Megan took the next crucial step, outfitting her with a tracking collar. “Using a tracker device was quite simple,” she explained. “We attached it to a collar, fastened it on her, and set her free, which was a tough decision.” The plan succeeded, as the mother instinctively returned to her puppies.

The tracking device led the rescuers to a shed where the mother, named Miranda, had taken refuge with her puppies. The team hurried to the spot and discovered Miranda with her litter of eight healthy puppies.
The mother and her pups were taken to a Tennessee shelter where they received food, water, and medical care. As the puppies grew, they were eventually ready for adoption. All eight found loving homes swiftly, and Miranda was also adopted into a caring family.
Thanks to the dedication of Megan and the shelter staff, this dog family is now thriving in their new homes. Their story highlights the impact compassionate rescuers can have, turning a potentially tragic situation into a heartwarming tale of rescue and love.
