A team from Stray Rescue of St. Louis sprang into action after learning about a pup lost alone in the woods. They quickly gathered their equipment and set off, bringing along some tasty snacks for the hungry canine.
The vastness of the forest presented a challenge, and after hours of searching, the rescuers were about to give up when they spotted a small gray figure nestled among the dried leaves. This was the pup they were searching for.

Startled by the unfamiliar faces, the pup was initially frightened. However, one rescuer won his trust by offering a delicious treat, which the pup eagerly devoured. This small act of kindness gave him the courage to stand up and follow his rescuers. Unfortunately, they soon noticed a wound on his leg and realized how emaciated he was.
Time was of the essence as nightfall approached, making their return journey more challenging. The pup hesitated to leave the safety of the woods, so one of the rescuers carried him to a clear path where he attempted to walk on his own. However, exhausted by his ordeal, he struggled to continue walking for long distances.
Despite these challenges, the rescuers carried the weary pup the entire mile back to their vehicle, arriving just before darkness fully set in. The next step was transporting the pup, now named Matlock, to a veterinary clinic for a crucial medical evaluation.

On Stray Rescue’s Facebook page, they shared an update: “He had the best night’s sleep he’s had in a very long time. He is not out of the woods, and he’ll have to fight for his life. His body weight is at a very dangerous level, especially for the size dog he is. But he’s in the right place. He’s very sweet and very safe. You got this buddy.”
Though Matlock is now in a warm and loving environment, his journey to recovery is just beginning. Medical tests revealed that his wound was actually a tumor requiring urgent attention. For those interested in following Matlock’s progress or contributing to his recovery, donations can be made through his dedicated page.
