For almost a year, a Cane Corso dog named Bear roamed the streets of Mobile, Alabama with an unusual and distressing problem—a plastic box stuck on his head. Understandably frightened, he avoided all attempts by passersby who tried to approach and help him. His large size complicated rescue efforts, as it made typical traps ineffective.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, a dedicated team from the City of Mobile Animal Services and the Mobile County Animal Shelter joined forces in what turned out to be one of the most challenging rescue operations in the area. Bear, who was frequently sighted wandering with his unwanted headgear, had likely gotten stuck while scavenging for food from trash bins.
Despite the odds stacked against him, Bear managed to survive this ordeal. Eventually, a compassionate resident alerted authorities, sparking the monumental rescue initiative that saw local animal control officers and shelter staff work tirelessly to remove the box.
Although the initial attempt to catch Bear ended with him escaping after the box was removed, the team was determined. After a concerted effort involving numerous volunteers, Bear was successfully captured and brought to safety at the shelter.
Martin Miller, a volunteer involved in Bear’s rescue, shared on social media, “The staff absolutely LOVE him and he is being treated like a king. He is very sweet and has a long happy life ahead of him.”
Bear’s situation drew significant public interest. Though he was placed on a temporary hold, the attention he received during his stay at the shelter helped him become more sociable. One particular volunteer formed a special bond with Bear and decided to apply for his adoption.
Robert Bryant, Director of City of Mobile Animal Services, explained to WKRG, “Finding a home for a dog with such publicity is a big deal. Many people want to adopt him. Given this special case, we realized, who better to adopt him than one of the team members who worked so hard to rescue him?”
Bear is now a cherished member of the Miller family and shares a strong connection with his new owner, Martin. After years of solitude, Bear will never have to face loneliness again. His adoption is particularly meaningful, allowing him to remain close to the community that devoted so much effort to saving him.
He now actively participates as an ambassador for the City of Mobile Animal Services, visiting the shelter with Martin to promote the adoption of stray animals. Bear’s story has touched many hearts, and his future promises only happiness.
