Moose has a heartwarming tale that challenges the misconceptions about shelter dogs being “bad dogs.”
Despite enduring a tough start, including surviving a gunshot wound to the lung, this lovable pit bull had only one mission in life: to spread love to everyone she encountered. However, time was not on her side, as Moose was close to being euthanized due to a lack of adopters. In a twist of fate, Micky discovered Moose’s story just in time, changing the dog’s life forever.
A lucky extra kennel space provided Moose with a crucial reprieve, paving the way for her rescue and a chance at a new life. Upon learning about Moose’s plight, Micky immediately took action and submitted an adoption application without delay.
Moose bravely made the long journey from Houston, Texas, to Virginia, arriving five days later to meet Micky, who would become her savior.
The most heartbreaking aspect of Moose’s situation was the reason cited for her “behavioral euthanasia” decision—merely barking at another dog. “It’s really sad because she was labeled for behavioral euthanasia, and all the staff notes mentioned was that she barked at another dog,” Micky shared with GeoBeats Animals.
Moose had already faced numerous challenges, including being shot, suffering from heartworms, and undergoing an abortion. These experiences didn’t hinder her spirit, but improper labeling and misunderstanding did.
“I’m shocked that this dog, given how awful her first year of life was, wants to be everyone’s best friend,” Micky remarked.
Micky, prepared for difficulties, was pleasantly surprised by Moose’s demeanor. Moose quickly proved herself as an exemplary companion. She was house-trained from the beginning, suggesting she might have had an owner before.
Moose, contrary to the “behavioral risk” label, was gentle and loving, quickly making friends with people and dogs alike. Inspired by her nature, Micky embarked on training Moose to become a therapy dog.
“Despite everything, she has been the best girl ever and is learning more every day. She has made so much progress and has been the best thing that could have happened to me,” Micky shared.
Micky, who deals with mobility challenges, found the perfect support companion in Moose. Moose’s sensitivity and keen awareness were evident in her interactions.
“Usually, she sleeps by my legs, but if I’m having a bad flare-up and really don’t feel well, she’ll sleep by my head,” Micky noted.
As part of her new journey, Moose is working toward her OFA certifications and is on track to become an exceptional therapy dog.
Over the last year and a half, Moose has become an irreplaceable part of Micky’s family. Their bond is strong, filled with shared adventures and joy each day.
